Brakes

Brakes servicing and replacement

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Worn brake components don’t just increase stopping distances, they can cause pulling, vibration, noise, and uneven tyre wear.

Common brake symptoms

Drivers often come to us with concerns about:

  • Squeaking or grinding brakes

  • Judder or vibration when braking

  • Brake warning light on the dashboard

  • Handbrake not holding

  • Car pulling to one side when braking

  • Spongy or soft brake pedal

These symptoms often point to worn brake pads, discs, shoes, drums, or calipers.

Brake pads and discs

Brake pads and discs are the most common brake wear items, particularly on the front of the vehicle.

Over time:

  • Pads wear thin

  • Discs develop lips, scoring, or corrosion

  • Braking performance is reduced

We inspect pad thickness and disc condition before recommending replacement and only replace components that are genuinely worn.

Rear brakes: drums and shoes

Many vehicles use brake drums and brake shoes on the rear axle. Common issues include:

  • Worn or contaminated brake shoes

  • Seized adjusters

  • Weak or ineffective handbrake

  • Corroded or oval brake drums

Rear brakes are often overlooked but are essential for balanced braking and MOT compliance.

Brake calipers and hydraulic faults

Brake calipers apply pressure to the pads. When they fail, they can cause:

  • Uneven pad wear

  • Overheating brakes

  • Pulling under braking

  • Binding or seized wheels

We inspect calipers, sliders, and brake hoses as part of any brake diagnosis.

Are brakes checked during an MOT?

Brakes are checked during an MOT, but the test does not measure remaining brake life. A vehicle can pass an MOT but still need brake pads or discs changed shortly afterwards. That’s why regular brake inspections are important. We perform a free brake inspection as part of a full or interim service; you can also get your brakes checked with our free ten-point winter vehicle check.

What's included in our brake services?

Depending on the issue, brake work may include:

  • Brake pad replacement

  • Brake disc replacement

  • Drum and shoe replacement

  • Caliper repair or replacement

  • Brake fluid checks

  • Handbrake adjustment

All work is carried out using quality parts to manufacturer specifications.
